Please, please, please stop using the word "Democrat" as an adjective. "Democrat" is a noun. "Democratic" is an adjective. I know this is tough to remember, so the always-helpful Mr. Green Ministry of Grammar has a couple of examples for you:
WRONG: "Those goddamn Democrat senators shouldn't filibuster the president's judicial nominees."
RIGHT: "Darth Rove has made an example of that Democratic senator by using the Force to choke the life out of him."
Thank you for your kind consideration, my Republic friends.
Posted by Mr Green at July 11, 2005 09:08 PM | TrackBack"Democratic" is an adjective when applied to a system of government. Or possibly when applied to someone who subscribes to or believes in the principles of democracy.
But politicians who are members of the Republican party are called "Republican" politicians. Likewise politicians who are members of the Democrat party ought to be called "Democrat" politicians. Otherwise to be consistent we'd need to have Democratic and Republicanic Senators.
Republicans are Republicans, Democrats are Democrats. No reason to subtly attempt to assign "democratic" principles to just one party, unless that is what you mean to do...
Historical footnote: The parties were once one party called the "Democratic Republicans" (back when the Whigs were the opposition party). It doesn't seem to make sense that one party would take the adjective and the other take the noun.
I'll have to ask my Republicanic Senator John McCain about this...
Posted by: Desert Cat at July 12, 2005 01:18 AMOr perhaps alternatively Democrats could be referred to as "Democratian" politicians. That's a more accurate adjective anyway.
Posted by: Desert Cat at July 12, 2005 01:23 AMOooooooh, yeah. I'm gonna have to go ahead and sort of disagree with you there? Yeah.

I think the differentiation between the party and the principle is the capitalization. "That Democratic senator does not have democratic principles."
All this reminds me of another pet peeve, out of which I shall get another post shortly...
Posted by: Mr. Green at July 12, 2005 08:07 AMThe problem is that most Democrat politicians have no principals -- and certainly not democratic ones.
